Frazzing – A new word coined by Massachusetts psychiatrist Edward Hallowell has an expensive meaning. If you spend your time in reading this post during your work time, then you are 'Frazzing' ;)... It's short for frantic multitasking. This word came into existence as people started spending more time on E-mails, Instant messages, Cell phones etc..during their work time, which is having a great impact(loss) on the productivity!

According to a report, workers were found interrupted every 10 and a half minutes and it takes 23 minutes to be back on the track. I feel, if you are not doing any of the frazzings(E-mail,cellphone), then you will spend more than 23 minutes to find an alternative pass time :).

Also, you can't blame technology. When a new invention is made..discoveries grow in both positive and negative side.Eg..Nuclear power for electricity and bombs. Planes for transportation of people and bombs.Internet for Information and Virus.Chairs for sitting and hitting (in parliament?!.).So now frazzings is considered as the cost for Invention of cell phones, E-mails, Instant messages etc..

Is there a solution for this overload?. Some companies, such as Microsoft, want to create a form of artificial intelligence. Someday, perhaps, your computer could recognize that you've been working on one memo for an hour and filter out unrelated e-mails.

So, if forwarded ones are filtered how many mails will be delivered to your inbox?

Biggest Newsmakers!

Business Today has listed some India's biGGest newsmakers in 2005. They have spanned the list across different categories. Here's the list of top Companies and Personalities.

Top five companies:
1) Reliance Industries
2) HLL
3) Maruti
4) Microsoft
5) Infosys

And the Top five Personalities and also I have tried to remember them from my memory about their stunts in 2005 :)

1)L.N.Mittal – When I think of this guy, I remember TIME quoting his company as 'A Dangerously expanding empire'. And when he came to India to receive the ET's 'Global Indian of the award', he learned about an auction of fifty worsted clothes ( a suit) in the award function. He called upon the event manager and said 'we are 10 here and each of us will take 5 suits' and he swept everything, leaving no room for auctions and bells…!

2)Narayana Murthy – Hope he concentrated more on social life than Infy and was caught in the petty politics by Deve Gowda who pulled murthy , just to appear in the Headlines. But unfortunately Gowda didn't make it in this list and inadvertently murthy made it!. Following this, 'The Father of Singapore' during his India's visit, invited Murthy to politics, but he refused.

3)Bill Gates – There was more hype when he planned to visit India and it struck its highest point when he is in India and he also announced huge Investments..followed by lots of his interviews on almost all Major dailies ..Then he came to Chennai and nobody knows why he visited Karunanidhi, and Dayanidhi Maran enjoyed doing that.

4)Azim Premji – A low profile personality, who was in news when Vivek Paul quitted Wipro as its CEO and Premji also managed some big exits from his company. Premji also made some comments about Bangalore's Infrastructure, but Gowda was not interested in him as he accidentally told earlier that ' I don't know why Murthy complains about Banaglore when Azim Premji is quiet'.

5)Mukesh Ambani – Of course, on Reliance split up and he was allowing more rooms for speculation during that time, by speaking less on the issue, while Anil Ambani arranged for a 'Live' interaction with the Media. I always remembered Mukesh's calm face, until I saw him shouting at a person in his company's Annual General Meeting.Mukesh's group posted good profits in the last year.

India has presented itself extremely well in World Economic forum(WEF) being held at Davos(Swiz), that the VIPs out there confessed that 'India as the darling of Davos' . There was also some good news on MNCs investing in Inida and sources say that Dell has planned a manufacturing plant in India, a step towards the manufacturing boom. Still, there were concerns on relationship between India and US which is on the tough road.

At a session on jobs of the future, David Arkless, executive board member of the US-based Manpower, asked: 'Can we please stop being insecure about offshoring?'
Explaining, he said the absolute numbers of outsourced jobs were tiny. What developed countries instead should worry about was the future shortage of vocational skills. Electricians, plumbers, infrastructure workers and factory workers would be needed in large numbers and developed countries should focus on vocational degrees instead of academic qualifications. Also hear this, that healthcare jobs would not be outsourced because this required face-to-face contact. The Indian healthcare industry should look for an alternative.

And the media had its take on this forum with NDTV hosting a show 'Big Fight' on 'Can India overtake china?' with two Chinese(a bank executive and a professor), Thomas Friedman and Anand Mahindra of Mahindra & Mahindra on the board. The show didn't seem to be a big fight as all these Biggies were choosy in their views by balancing both India and China. But the ice was broken by Anand when he kept India over china in Innovation and Adaptability. He had his concern about china on its authoritarian rule and he said that the rulers will fix a strategy and will go by that and they are used to this procedure, but the intricacy arises once there is a sudden paradigm shift, whereas the Indians have a plus here, as they are used to travel on bumpy roads. So the Chinese executive countered with India's hurdle in facing the manufacturing boom in terms of Education, Infrastructure and Bureaucratic system. But Anand reacted that he didn't have any snag in the Government's system as he used to have in the 90's. But at the end, they all settled on the fact that Elephant and Dragon can't fight and they should effectively make use of each other's resources to develop the future. But the show anchor didn't have his day as the show ended in a consent, breaking the show's history where the participant used to leave the show with their faces at different directions.

An arresting news in WEF was that Pakistan's economy has recorded the second highest growth in Asia, after China as Pakistan clocked an 8.4 per cent growth rate last year.

Boon-2 for the second time.

As we are already in the economy boom guided by software and services industry, it's a bitter pill to accept that, we had missed the boon given by manufacturing industry. Now we have got the second boon after the Software services and this comes for the second time. Though India is highly touted be the driving force of world economy in the future, we aren't second to none. There Is China led by the Manufacturing boom. Though both the countries have different drivers, both are trying entering the space of others. Now china is luring investors from world countries to invest in their software industry. And similarly India is wooing investors to put their money in Manufacturing Industry.(But the interest being shown by China is more than India) This made companies like Microsoft, Intel, AMD, Infosys, TCS, Mphasis to name a few, to invest in china. Though India is the leader in services (outsourced), china can be considered as a deserved candidate for the competition as its heavily investing in the Services arena. Conversely, how much part does India have in the Manufacturing pie? It's quite evident from the recent investments made by Cisco, Intel,SemIndia,Tesco,Net Devices,CoWare that Inida has started its ride in the manufacturing Industry.

Many of the MNCs are leveraging the Indian talent by investing in Research and Development activities. It's good for the India in the long-term if companies invest in R&D. This can prevent movement of jobs from India in the future, as low-end jobs can be easily moved to the other counties by considering only cost as the parameter. But R&D cannot produce more jobs for the developing country like India where education penetration is very low. Only manufacturing can produce jobs in more areas. But above all, if there is a sudden surge in manufacturing industry then India will not be in a position to accept the boon. The reason is simple 'Lack of Infrastructure'. It's all to do with machines, goods, transportation and supply chain. Though steps are taken in improving the Infrastructure, the pace in which developments are growing should be accelerated. Despite the fact that India has the required talent and resources (people) to carry out the job efficiently, the issue in attracting the global customers is to make them believe that 'We can do the job for you'. We can't convince them by showing our brains; it's to do with showcasing the physical growth and Infrastructure.

The 'lack of Infrastructure's effect is not much realized in software services as there is no competitor for India (At least near competitor), but that's not the case in the Manufacturing world where china is far ahead of India and we have Just born. So, Infrastructure is the key to tap the Manufacturing Industry and having got the key, India should unlock it.

The Study conducted by London Institute of Cancer research has revealed that 'Cell phones pose no risk of Brain cancer'. Once and again, I used to hear the news and survey about cell phone's hazard. There were numerous 'yes' and 'No' about the danger, that I was fully confused to conclude. So on the safer side; I prefer to hear the voice in my left ear. It happened so many times that I hear in my right ear, suddenly remembering about the danger I keep my phone in my left ear using my right hand. On this state, my friends used to mock me' Is it Mr.Arnold? Does your big biceps prevent you on keeping the same side' . To this extent, I was personally affected by the surveys :-(.

This UK study is done to answer a Swedish study which claimed that there was an increased risk of contracting brain cancer among rural cell phone users. The UK study noted that there were more reports of brain cancers in the right side, that coincided with the side of phone usage and it was over reported. The UK researchers said 'This results in under reporting use on the opposite side of the head'. Hope this is the last study.

Now, the Arnold in me has died!

Work hard, Party hard

The Big news in Indian Aviation Industry is the Acquisition of Air Sahara by Jet Airways. The other airway which bid Air-Sahara was king-fisher (Vijay Mallya). This is not the first time, the horn was locked between Vijay Mallya and Jet-Airways. Earlier, there were rumors on poaching pilots by these companies from other. But on this Acquisition arena, Sahara ruled out King-fisher as 'it has under-estimated our company'. But, the motivating piece that I need to share with u is about this man Vijay Mallya.

I am a grand admirer of Mallya for his definition of life. 'Work Hard, Party hard'.Yes, he does that way. On day one, I saw him in a Magazine, posing for a snap flanked with teen girls in a Kingfisher sponsored Fashion show. The next day, he was in the news for acquiring close to a dozen breweries companies. Then he continued the Acquisition by buying out his competitor Shaw Wallace, thus United Breweries (King-Fisher's parent company) became the second largest liquor baron in the world. These stints remind me in the likes of Lakshmi Mittal, who lives the life and also does the job in a grand way. When Indian government banned Liquor ads, Mallya branded the Kingfisher in all ways except for the beer. He branded in Fashion show, sport Cars to soda water. Moreover, he himself is popular in the media for his stunts. As an Advertising agent points out, he overtakes the brand King-Fisher in any show, He has such a large persona that it steals away from the brand. He looms large over all events organized by his company. After you come back from a Kingfisher fashion show, for example, you remember not the beer brand but Mallya's colorful turban and his diamond earrings. Recently, when Bollywood star Saif Ali khan released Kingfisher's 2006 calendar, he commented 'Either I should be born as this calendar's photographer or Vijay Mallya'.Such a party person became a solemn business man as he started Low-cost King Fisher Airlines. But today, after the Acquisition of Sahara by Jet-Airways, there is a profound likelihood for a raise of Monopoly in the aviation Industry, evidently a great threat to Mallya's carrier. So what's the next step for Mallya? Just a few minutes ago, the news flashed in NDTV that 'King Fisher airlines to form an alliance with the rest of the Airline-Carriers'. The man started the game!

In my previous post on "Mathematics", I had mentioned about the advantage for Google if they enter the broadcasting market. Now they have done it!.

"Google will make foray into radio" --- Google said that it would break into radio ads with an agreement to buy DMarc Broadcasting Inc. for $1.24 billion.

So, the next move fo Google would be in Video advertising market. You can expect still more!

For Google, Revenue is directly propotional to Number of Competetitors!

Mathematicians - Redefined!

During my Secondary school days, my opinion on Mathematics was 'where am I going to apply these Calculus, Integration and Algebra in my work...will I do sums for which i'll be paid for it?' But now i'm wondering if I should have preserved my school notes for today's market and Industry LoL :-)

In today's IT industry, the first place where I saw Maths being exploited is Google. It is not surprising when they used the power of mathematics to search the results by page rank system. But It doesn't stop there!. They have created algorithms to display the relevant ads on the page by statistics, which is now contributing 90% of the google's revenue. Infact, if they enter the broadcasting market (did they?), based on the words searched in a particular geography, they can display relevant ads on the consumers television screen. Google is also doing statistical analysis by registering the words being searched and IP address of the system.Do you know Google Compute, which can use your system's idle time for distributed computing and also for improving Google's services. These data will of course help Google to display more precise ad content for the user. In yester years of marketing world, ads were created for a particular category of people based on the culture, location and customs. As the future will be everything under the umbrella of online, ads can’t be produced for a whole set of people, but for each and every individual user.

Another company, which I wish to mention here is
UPS United Parcel service (A company taking care of Global supply chains including Logistics, distribution, transportation etc) .They don't just do logistics service by transporting the goods, but they arrive at an optimal solution for generating a best route for the destination. They also provide solutions to global companies for optimizing the road in improving their supply chain. For this to happen, UPS maintains a think-tank which consists of around 60 mathematics PhDs working on algorithms to uncover the best solution for their distribution network.

Though, Mathematics is not new to any of the industry, it has a major role to play in this technological era. Mathematicians of today have numerous data available in their hands. As it was mentioned earlier Search engine is a big contributor, in terms of words being searched and dimensions around it helps the industry to arrive at more precise conclusions in the consumer market. When I mention consumer market, we cant ignore the retail giant Wal-mart. This company is also engaged in data collection and research activities. Thereby, all the products in Wal-mart store will be embedded with RFIDs (In simple, an advanced bar-code with more product information) which will have all possible information ( If it is a soap..its company, color, fragrance, for dry or wet skin etc). Once a customer picks up a product, at the billing-section, the information about the product will be stored. This way, a huge database will be maintained which enables the company to predict customers demand and thereby their mind in various seasons. This can really boost the store's performance in off-seasons too.

So, you have more data in hand and you can't be idle without analyzing it and the mathematician inside you is the need of the era.

Read the BW's take on Mathematicians.

'The rise of mathematics is heating up the job market for luminary quants, especially at the Internet powerhouses where new math grads land with six-figure salaries and rich stock deals. Tom Leighton, an entrepreneur and applied math professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, says:'All of my students have standing offers at Yahoo! and Google .' Top mathematicians are becoming a new global elite. It's a force of barely 5,000, by some guesstimates, but every bit as powerful as the armies of Harvard University MBAs who shook up corner suites a generation ago.'

Don't miss the bus!

This is akin to my previous post on Indian Education. The reason to revisit is, because of an article in Businessweek which i thought of sharing with you...which speaks on India's potential to handle the outsourcing fruit. But unfortunately the article is on "whether it can handle?"... Check out the synopsis!

"Without updated infrastructure and a better education system, the outsourcing mecca faces a dearth of qualified engineers"

"McKinsey argues, is that only about a quarter of India's college graduates are "suitable" for employment by multinationals or their Indian outsourcing partners. The chief handicaps are weak spoken-English skills, especially among graduates of non-elite schools, and the uneven quality of college curricula and faculty"

"This is the thing that India really needs to fix now," says Kaka. "The raw material is there, but the quality is low."

If offshore outsourcing work grows as rapidly as expected, the study predicts, in five years India will have a shortfall of 150,000 IT engineers and 350,000 business-process staff.

Everyone from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to state officials to corporate CEOs agree on the need to get serious about infrastructure and education if the country is to continue moving forward as a tech and services powerhouse.

And finally.....

"The question is whether India's chaotic and corrupt political system can deliver before multinationals begin to find better alternatives to India"

Hope we dont miss the bus, as we did in Manufacturing Industry.

Linus, Linux and the Flat world.

There was an intermission between this and the previous post, as I just got engrossed in the book 'The world is flat' by Thomas Friedman, a New York times columnist and a renowned thinker of all times. In fact, I had borrowed his word in one of my previous posts. If I am to rate this book, it's the Best book I have ever read...this is not just another comment you see in the backside of every book and I just mean it. I could say it's a web of information on how world got flat or Globalized. He just swirled around the world form Wal-Mart to Google to China to India to the world and the web world, to get this book written. To sum up, he toured the world to conclude that 'The world is flat' :o). If you are eager to know, why the world has now renovated itself to a borderless world ( At least in trade!!!) and how and what are big guys doing, then this is the right book.

He has mentioned about, the ten things that has flattened the world. One of them is Open-Source; it's the code or software available for free (of use). When we speak about open-Source, we can't ignore Linux, the revolution. I thought it would be interesting here, to say something more about Linus Torvalds, the man ( a boy?) behind Linux( I think, I've read this in RD). He is form Finland, the land which will also remember us of Raikkonen, the F1 hero. Let's move to Linus. He was 21 when he announced the world (over web-chat), that he had developed a code and he just asked the geeks to check how it works. He was not aware of the phenomenon he has developed. It was amazing for the people in the chat, how a person can just give away an OS for free, when Microsoft was just piling up the money form its Windows. The next message from Linus was to add any tool or code to the existing version, so as to make it more effective. Then an online forum was setup by the programmers to be informed(and discussed) on any code being added to it, so as to keep the updated version. Then it's just a smooth ride, till it was developed into a complete Operating system with high secure applications.

Linus was showing some signs of brilliance in his childhood, when his father brought him a Toy game. The toy game has some 100 parts which you should assemble it, to form a complex ship. The manual to develop the ship was in English, which the Finnish guy doesn't know. So his father just told him to wait for the next day, so that he can help his child to complete the ship. But the child didn't wait for the next day and he had it completed before his father returned home from his office. His father was surprised as he thought, it wud take months to complete it!!! Then, his passion for computer started when his granpa just allowed him to use his old computer as a type-writer, as he felt bit inflexible to use the keyboard. Thereon, the guy took control over the system and the rest is history. When Linus was asked on his decision to give away the free code, his 'answer' told that he is a non-materialistic person and he just want to be different and to 'be yourself'. As expected, he was an out-standing student in his college, also serving as an professor while studying!!!. And you know, wat made him to write a new OS…When he was studying in college, he couldn't afford a personal version Of UNIX, then popular in the academic world!. Though the first open-source revolution happened in the age of releasing Apache Web server( then popular among IT companies)….Linux had its popularity as world saw it as an alternative to Microsoft Windows.

The Apache and Linux showed the world, the power of sharing which ultimately grew in it's own dimensions. Wikepeida and google's way of business can be the good examples. Though the Open-Source culture has some disadvantages, it had made the s/w tools available to every netizens.

And , what Linus torvalds did then?.. He worked a Software Engineer(!) in a Chip company at US, and his work was a Secret!!! Now he is in Open Source Development Labs, a Beaverton, Oregon based software consortium.

Though this post is not a part of the book, I wud like to share some fascinating facts and happenings from Friedman's work. C u der!

And the Most Admired Foreign Companies are...

I never thought that India and the Indian companies have made a real big impact in US, until I came across a survey which read US professionals. They consider China, India and South Korea to be their top competitors. They dislike products from Arab Nations, Pakistan, China and India (the countries are ordered!) and interestingly they believe that in 20 years form now, Global workforce will be seamless.

Count this!... The most admired foreign companies are Lenovo(1), Tata(2), Infosys(3)..Wipro(6). Murthy have reaped more brand for the company than when he planned to list Infy in NASDAQ, to gain global attention!

But, the bottom line is, though US companies are well equipped to compete in Global accompany, fewer believe their companies can effectively compete against China, India and South Korea.

Dangerous warning!

Narayana Murthy warns :

"Companies have received open invitations from countries such as South Korea, China, East Asian countries and countries in Europe. There is every chance of shifting, if needed infrastructure is not given in India "

If NRN expresses this concern in the public, the Bureaucrats and politicians should understand the seriousness of the situation. It started of with moving to other city(Read: Non-bangalore) to other country.

I am not sure of how many issues does bangalore face in Infrastructure..but when i googled "bangalore infrastructure issues", it returned 598,000 issues?!.......kwel!!! :-)

Indian Education and its model.

In the eve of the New Year (the evening of the old year!), I am introduced to a new friend by my uncle. As a basic rule of thumb, I thought of starting the conversation with “ what r u doing?...which college…which year did u passout..” and I let the conversation to go in its own way! Unfortunately, our chat never drifted away frm education. He had finished his UG at University of Michigan, US. So, I was excited to know the UG life at US.

He was comparing the way the syllabus are organized in US universities, to orient the needs of the Industry. His specialization is in VLSI technology and as part of his curriculum he did a project at Intel. I was quite dazed on his competence to take on a project in Intel and he quickly retorted that it’s just putting his theoretical subjects into the practical way. This is plausible only if his subjects are directly oriented towards the industry needs. The Industries in US has consensus with the Universities not just in placements, but also on their curriculum. This makes the Job easier for the industry in the training phase and it also keeps the curriculum in pace with the Industry and the technology But when I evaluated this against the Indian curriculum, though we are not in par with the latest trends, we didn’t have the advantage that is being enjoyed by the US schools. It has the advantage of housing the industries who define the technology; it has the advantage of being provided with the equipment (from Industries) for the syllabus, as it demands. Another key advantage is the opportunity of employment provided by these industries and which is also leveraged by the institutions. It is a Win-Win situation in the US. But, this cannot be expected in the Indian institutions at least for some years back from now. But you can’t accept if this is not possible in today’s world .Today the World is Flat. According to Thomas Friedman, the world is flat because of developing countries like India and china and Of course Globalization. When everything can be Globalized, why not the Education. Indian Universities can make use of the MNC’s presence here and also with Indian MNC’s. This should happen at every University. If its executed only in IIT’s and top universities, then it’s a costly affair, where there will be a great divide among the Indian student’s competence. The focus should be also given for converting the theoretical subjects to practical applications. It’s quite encouraging to witness the step taken by the Indian MNC’s to work along with the educational Institutions. At least to my knowledge, Software giant Infosys has taken a step in narrowing the gap between the Curriculum and the Industry needs.

Though Indians are know for their analytical ability, it will serve the purpose only if they are kept updated with the current technology and applying it. If they come to know only after their education, it will be just like an information to them. But only if its educated during their studies, it can grow its own dimensions and thus the Indians can define the next technology.

We hear more and more praises form Global leaders on Indian students competence, but also hear this…

'India does not produce enough good computer engineers and those it does are good at theory but not very well equipped to handle the practical aspects.'--Microsoft Chief Technical Officer Craig Mundie

On the other side, the institution should not only fabricate the students for Industry but also for the Research and Development activities. My friend was citing about the US universities approach towards producing Researchers and Professors. In his university, sessions are taken for two brands of students. One, those who aspire for entering the Job market and the other, whose aim is to become a researcher or a Professor. This de-risks the area of Innovation and Creativity.

As a final note, this is the right time for the Indian Universities to be on par with the global trend by leveraging the presence of Global companies in India and it will also address the problem of unemployment where thousands of Engineers are being unemployed but the Industry is still in demand of thousands of Engineers.

Hope, I will have my turn to say something more to my friend, about Indian Education during our next meet :-). Can I?
